The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
