Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
